Daniel Acuña's meticulous drawings of clouds are anchored in the idea of drawing as a meditative practice that focuses and calms the mind, freeing it to contemplate life's greater questions. Containing references to mythology and philosophy, his clouds are pulled directly from stories of Buddhist enlightenment and inspired by Ancient Chinese painting.
Daniel is known for his excellent draughtsmanship across a range of techniques and materials. From drawings made with charcoal dust to intricate aquatints, his works are recognisable for their subtle marks and gestures, uncompromising detail, and his ability to push each medium to its limits.
Starting with a piece of paper covered completely in charcoal, he draws his clouds by erasing charcoal from the paper and returning areas to its natural white. For Daniel, drawing in such a way involves a process of creation and destruction, addition and subtraction, that echoes our dynamic relationship with the natural world and the wider universe.
