Priscilla González
Costa Rican artist Priscilla González is known for her intricate papercut artworks and her focus on the complexities of femininity, domesticity and intimacy.
Her works make reference to doilies, crochet and lace veils - objects associated with respectable women and domesticity. Yet the curvaceous figures in her papercuts are taken from vintage erotica. And so she weaves together the public persona of 'respectable' femininity and the contradictory eroticisms and desires that come to life behind closed doors.
“For me, paper represents the fragility of women. But it’s also flexible, and so it’s strong. It can twist, bend and adapt. I love how I remove sections from the paper when I cut out the female forms. In removing material, I reduce the paper down to something less. But at the same time, I’m making a beautiful image, and so building up the paper in another way. A metaphor for finding beauty in simplicity, a visual symbol for the idea that less is more.”
Priscilla González

“I reject all that is instantaneous and immediate – I want things to take time. And I invest myself in processes that require patience and extended periods of time for their completion: sewing and crocheting, for example. It’s this desire to slow things down that led me to work with the time-consuming papercut method.”
