María Duque
Bogotá, Colombia (b. 1996).
María Duque's abstract paintings create worlds in which digital and traditional artistic materials become intertwined. Perfectly smooth and meticulously designed backgrounds are interrupted by splashes, drips and pools of paint.
For María, this interruption represents the persistence and determination of the real world when faced with the proliferation of digital technologies and social media platforms. All that is physical and vital triumphing over the untouchable and the unreal.
"Painting has texture, it's something tangible that we can touch, we have control over it. Yet we can't eliminate all of its spontaneity. And this spontaneity can't be replaced by a digital brush in a software program. Paint brings us closer to all that is physical, all that is real - it moves us away from the neat superficiality of our screens."
