Jarrón con Godzila
Jarrón con Godzila by José Benmayor is a unique still life art print that explores the intersection of pop culture, history and artistic tradition in a decorative vase. Created as part of a series of gouache paintings, this work reflects the artist's appreciation for the medium’s richness, versatility and expressive qualities.
For the Benmayor, vases offer more than a beautiful subject; they provide an opportunity to engage with visual languages from different cultures and eras. In Jarrón con Godzila, the vessel becomes a meeting point between past and present, inviting viewers to consider how objects carry stories, traditions and symbolism across time. The imagery encourages dialogue between cultural and popular influences while celebrating the enduring role of the decorative arts in human history.
Benmayor’s broader practice is rooted in the observation of objects that captivate him through their graphic appeal, symbolism and personal significance. Influenced by Pop Art, comics and illustration, he approaches still life painting with a contemporary sensibility, embracing expressive painterly imperfections rather than photographic realism.
This Jarrón con Godzila still life art print showcases José Benmayor’s distinctive ability to transform everyday and historical objects into quirky, visually engaging works that connect art, culture and memory.
"I don't seek to interpret what I see as if it were a photograph. Instead, I revel in my own unique imperfections, those that give character to an image. That's why I developed a figurative language that evokes pop art, comics and cartoons.
My work is an observation of certain objects that catch my attention. All for different reasons: their symbolic power, what they represent, or what they mean to me. But their primary appeal is the graphic play they offer when I paint them: typography, textures, characters, icons and so on. Some are everyday items, like paint cans, milk cartons or product packaging.
They vary wildly. But all belong to a collective imagination bound by history."

José Benmayor
"Perhaps one of the oldest themes in painting is still life: compositions based on different elements that portray something beyond the object itself. The selection of these objects, the relationship between their historical and cultural contexts, is what gives them meaning: a meaning that speaks of painting, but also of humanity. This selection isn't arbitrary. It's here that we find a desire to chart a course, a voyage of discovery for graphic objects in our culture, how they relate to one another, and how they tell a story."
