J&L Constructores
Artistic duo Jimmy Espinosa and Lina Prieto dedicate their artistic practice to preserving the visual memory of Colombia’s urban and popular culture. Known collectively as J&L Contructores, their depictions of the country’s changing environment capture everyday scenes and social dynamics that might otherwise pass below the radar. Their paintings of Bogotá’s domestic windows, each protected by an intricately crafted grille, act as unconventional and sensitive portraits of a city and the inhabitants that make it thrive.
“By painting the doors and windows of houses in popular Latin American neighbourhoods we create alternative portraits of the people who inhabit these spaces. The personal transformations these thresholds undergo say a lot about the realities, tastes, needs and opportunities of their owners. Each façade bears witness to and reflects multiple changes in its use and aesthetics."

"We wanted to preserve a memory of the daily "hustle" that many homes resort to, generating informal sources of income to make ends needs. Our art acknowledges the home as a multifunctional space that contributes to the family economy and the creativity of its inhabitants in the face of adversity.”
