Art Lovers VI
A piece of brightly coloured wall art, Art Lovers VI by Magola Moreno shows two strong female characters presenting a united front as a small yet loving family. The bright pink of the walls and the green of the mother's suit make this a optimistic print. But look closely at the portrait behind them, a recreation of one of Cindy Sherman's Society Portraits from 2008, and the thin veil of strength begins to show cracks. Just as Sherman's doyenne of high society has to fulfil a role and embody a certain character to present to society every day, so this couple as to raise itself up every day to face a life that might not be as easy as it first seems. Beautiful in the optimism, truthfulness and unwavering dedication that it represents, this print by Magola pays homage to family unity and bonds, no matter the shape they take.

“This piece is part of a series that includes paintings, photographs or sculptures by artists that I like. It talks about couples with situations that the art that accompanies them ends up defining. In this case, a family without a man. Two women, despite their age, seem quite secure; the bright colours help to reinforce their outward narrative of strength and joy."

Magola Moreno
Magola's art is characterised by a strong questioning of her own perspective, while also challenging what the world deems to be true or valid or beautiful. All of Magola’s paintings are fictional and imaginative, providing an alternative to the harsh realities of the world. And she is insistent that she doesn’t, “subvert any traditions or challenge any expectations. My work benefits from my limitations and coming up with my own version distinguishes what I do.”
