Camila Barreto Hoyos
Bogotá, Colombia (b. 1982).
Camila Barreto Hoyos's work is bold and colourful. It is unapologetically abstract and driven by a desire to investigate pictorial composition and the painted surface. Yet it is also sensitive and subtle, and each of her abstract compositions is firmly rooted in human experience and the artist's day-to-day life.
Camila pours her own experiences into sensory explorations of colour, form and composition. Using her art to chase the slippery emotions and memories that come with each lived moment, she gives material form to her innermost experiences where words might otherwise fail.
Imbued with feeling, large amorphous forms become heavy, stubbornly pushing against one another, or thin slivers of paint seep through impossibly tight passageways. Shapes push against one another, changing and altering with each other's force, while colours surround, embrace, and cocoon. And it's here in this visual tug of war that Camila gives voice to her, and our, innermost emotions.
