Depicted as insects would see it – with eyes sensitive to ultraviolet and infrared light – Esteban Peña’s Buttercup has brilliant specks of nectar and pollen scattered across it, calling insects in to feast and feed, and so continue the pollination cycle.
“Using the same four colours as an inkjet printer (cyan, magenta, yellow, black), I build up to 50 layers of paint on the paper to create realistic paintings. This protracted technique acts as a metaphor for slowing down, inviting myself and the spectator to look more closely at our surroundings and find beauty in the everyday.”
