Nariguera 2
In the dark blue art print Nariguera 1 by Costa Rican artist Priscilla González, the artist makes reference to Pre-columbian narigueras, a form of intricate nasal jewellery made from gold. Used by both men and women, it's believed narigueras were worn as a symbol of status and, research suggests, during wedding rituals. Priscilla's narigueras are decorated with curvaceous female forms taken from vintage erotic literature. A creative and powerful reminder of the tension between societal expectations and the personal erotic desires that society tells us are taboo for women above a certain age.

"My works start with me researching images of women in erotic magazines from the 1960s and 1970s. I choose strong female forms, each with its own particular negative shape. I then scan these images and organize them into a design before printing out the design and beginning to cut into the paper.
Through Studio Parga I’m delighted to offer the designs from which my papercuts are made.”

Priscilla González
Costa Rican artist Priscilla González is known for her intricate works on paper and her focus on femininity and intimacy. She references domestic objects such as doilies, as well as erotic photos of curvaceous women from the 1960s and 1970s. By combining the domestic and the erotic, Priscilla's art highlights the tension being a ‘respectable’ woman in public and the private desires that come to life behind closed doors, away from the judgemental gaze of society.
